Nothing makes me crankier than a kitchen counter full of junk. Right now I am pretty cranky. A pack of vacation pictures that haven’t found a scrapbook, permission slips that need signing, flowers that died last week, and sparklers that never saw the 4th of July are currently gracing my counter. But mostly—junk mail. Tons of junk mail. If you think you get a lot of junk mail, try having a junior in high school. Our mailbox is stuffed with college paraphernalia every day. And this has been going on for months.

In an effort to regain control over my counter and my sanity, I’ve decided to start throwing some of it away. I mean, she’s only a junior. We have plenty of time to figure out which college to send her to, right? To be honest, I hadn’t even opened or looked at most of the stuff…until I started tossing it. Then I started to take notice…what to throw, what to keep. My criteria was pretty simple…things that caught my eye and made me want to open them got to stay. No idea if these colleges are any good or not, but I really like their marketing departments! (Yes, my criteria will change as we get a little more serious about the whole thing!)

So what have I opened this week and why? In a sea of envelopes big and small, postcards, brochures and simple handwritten letters, these are the few items that made me stop, look and open.

#1: Tri-fold postcard from The University of Chicago

Loved the outside. Coffee stain. Formula for caffeine. Engaging poetic quote about coffee. Let's see the inside...

Inside is a map of campus with pullouts showing all the great places you can get coffee with a little story for each. And there’s a coloring contest. The prospective student is to color it and mail it back where it will be posted on their “virtual refrigerator”. Very creative…time to check this college out!

#2: Postcard from Caltech

The hand-drawn cartoon-man caught my eye. And the Didgeridoo. My younger daughter actually sang a song in choir about the Didgerdoo last year, so this got me reading. It’s a postcard, so no opening, but I did read both sides. I liked its simplicity and creativity.

So, what have you opened this week and why?

Send me some pictures along with your reason for opening and I will post them. Maybe we can all learn something from each other!
